"The Date"
(2018)

Lizzie and Olivia met on a dating site and, after exchanging text messages, decide to meet up for their first in-person date. At the restaurant, the dinner conversation seems to be going well and the two women seem to be hitting it off. They decide to keep the date going and head out for some post-dinner dancing. Will the sparks continue to fly or will the date end in flames?

There is so little and yet so much happening in this short film. I found that there was a lot of chemistry between the actors, the film is easy to watch and relate to, and within just a few minutes, I was really rooting for a happy ending. It’s remarkable how in just a few scenes, I was so invested in the story and the characters. I Absolutely recommend this short film.

There’s something so fun about first dates and even second or third dates. There’s also that waste of time aspect a lot of us have experienced with a nightmare of a first date. Overall, however, the anxiety and the unknowingness of meeting up with some stranger with the purpose of trying to figure out quickly if you like them or want to invest time and energy into them is fun. It’s almost a bizarre ritual though, but that’s how we function.

The film reminded me of a time I was going on a first date with a girl I had met out at a bar. I told her I would meet up with her for drinks and if everything was going well, we could transition to dinner. This is not my recommended way of being charming, by the way, but it’s how I handled it at the time. We met up at a restaurant bar and after having a few drinks,  we very casually agreed to move over to the dinner part of our date. We had a lovely dinner and decided to keep it going by heading back to the bar we had originally met at a few days prior. Everything fell into place so perfectly. It was amazing. If I had to pinpoint my best first date of all time, I would definitely have to say it was that one. And for anyone who cares, we’re still together.
